Session 6 ELEVEN

I remember when I had my internship in Channel Zhejiang, many staff would talk about one thing:

One day, every one came to work as usual. When they step into the office building, they see a white banner hung on the central over their heads, and it says:  RIP Mr.xxx. Mr.xxx is a hard-working journalist who treats every piece of news seriously, but finally died for overwork. Every day he visit at least 4 pieces of news and after work, he always took the overtime. His office is always light on in the midnight. You know, the capable are usually the busy one, the leaders believe in his working ability and his sense of responsibility. But unfortunately, it caused his death.

In recent years, media becomes a high healthy-risk industry as the staff suffer more physical & psychological pressure than those in other general working units. We can lalways see many news tell that a media staff die for same reason. And more and more people realized that TV station should release staff’s stress and ease their  workload. But most leaders would think that, only the heavy stress can push staff work hard, better and efficient. Thus, it comes to an issue that should the staff take too much workloads. When cannot settle down the argument, staff would tell that true story in order to struggle for their rights, also they think they should work for live instead of live for work. They do not hope the tragedy happen again.

Resource 16

This issue of TEDTalks presents a simple but powerful model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question "Why?" The lecturer Simon Sinek's examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers.

Resources 15

An interview with David Kester, Chief Executive, Design Council. To foster a culture of innovation, managers must look outward to identify consumers' problems and spark ideas for solving those problems. They must also ease employees' fear of change.
Kester's approach to fostering a culture of innovation is one that makes complete sense.

Session 5 ELEVEN

Compare similarities and differences and develop a table evidencing this.

I choose the Zhejiang Ocean University to compare with my TV station because, it is a general learning organization which is also a different type to my organization.
According to the result of LO survey, I statistic the data into the following three tables (Zhejiang TV Station vs Zhejiang Ocean University):

T1: Learning Organization Scores Summary

ZTS
ZOU
Leadership that reinforces learning
65%, bottom quartile
68%, second quartile
Learning process

79%, third quartile
Learning environment

Session 4 ELEVEN

What PD happens in your workplace? What strategies does your organisation have in place to encourage development, change and innovation?

Television is a profitable industry and certainly, the staff work in TV station always get high income. Their high income contains two parts: the basic salary and payment for program (payment for program is just like the bonus in general companies). Basic salaries are mostly similar, but the payments for program would be so different. If you want to get higher income, you must try everything possible to enhance the program quality. See~ it is one part of professional development in TV station.

Session 3 ELEVEN

Develop and articulate ideas for describing leading change in an organisation of your choice.

There are five essential elements contain in the framework for leadership which is made by Michael Fullan (2001): moral purpose, understanding change, relationship building, knowledge creation and sharing, coherence making.
When take consider into the organization that I involved in, the leading change in TV station can be analyzed by this framework as following:

Session 2 ELEVEN

What strategies does your organisation have in place to encourage development, change and innovation? Identify a model of change to help explain change within an organisation which you have experienced.
Before I came to HK, I had worked in Channel Zhejiang(Zhejiang Radio & Television Group), which is the best TV Station in local. However, with fierce competition in Chinese media industry, a TV station will die out if without continuous self-improvement. Thus, according to market need, this TV station re-integrates the channel resources, try to better performance and gain a higher TV rating.
