Session 2 Junyan

Requirement: Identify a model of change to help explain change within an organization which you have experienced.

Based on the characters of Guangdong museum, the most suitable model is the cultural innovation model. Obviously, the museum environment of yesterday was very different from the emerging computer-supported and highly-technical environment in museums today. The Guangdong museum offers an integrated environment for clients to figure out the knowledge regarding the Guangdong history, Guangdong nature resources and work of arts, which is accumulated, analyzed, and distributed by information professionals.
Before I talk about the change in the Guangdong museum, I need to give some explanations for why people come to museum and different types of tourists. It’s will helpful for us to understand these changes well.

Why do people go to museum?
It’s universally acknowledged that museum-going is a leisure-time activity. As a leisure-time activity, museum-going is one of many activities that serve our need for "personal self-definitions and agendas for development".

The main groups of tourists and their characters
Children tourists
As a children tourist, he/she could not have the enough educational attainment and intelligence as same as the adults, resulting in he/she is not able to receive the whole information in the museum. Moreover, in most cases, children needn’t have a deep understanding and just be aware of common sense referring the history of this period. Additionally, there is another problem about the children that they hardly focus on something for a long time, especially the one they don’t interested in.

Ordinary tourists
For ordinary tourists who possess a large proportion in whole tourists, they regard scanning the museum as their main purpose, leading that the information presented in the museum should be brief but a wide range of. Ordinary tourists always are attracted by a series of services supported by the museum such as guided tours for exhibitions, audio guide services and lectures.

Professional tourists
There is no doubt that the professional tourist is the one who has a well understanding in a particular field which concentrates on the subject of a museum. As a professional tourist, therefore, he/she doesn’t need any fundamental knowledge at all, and desire to pay more attention to extended professional contents. Holding an academic lecture or seminar is a good way for satisfying their information needs, which provides them the opportunities to communicate with others
Another special character of a professional tourist is the initiative. Unlike the other two groups which receive the information passively, the group of professional tourists is clearly about which information they want to search, and want to do the seeking behavior more effectively. For a museum, it should offer a variety of information resources which can be demonstrated with different types, and guide them to accomplish their searches.
